Inspiring a love of place – Field trips to the farm

We’ve been sharing the farm with some local students this month. We hosted the environmental science classes from the Port Angeles High School one day, and Jefferson Elementary students another, with Dry Creek classrooms coming this week.

Along the river the elementary students played a game of salmon survival led by a team from the Natural Resources Department of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe.

Then they joined me in the garden to transplant green onion starts, poke around in the compost for worms, harvest green onions and a few leafy greens, and help tromp down a TALL row of rye and vetch to form a protective mulch to reduce weed pressure and increase moisture.

With Jim the students enjoyed the opportunity to experience livestock up close, helping move fences to send cattle to fresh pasture, and feeding and interacting with the pigs.

Then we enjoyed some game time and shared a meal in the shade before sending the students home.
